Is package delivery safe?
The first thing I want to say is that there continues to be no change in LSO service. It is business as usual. If that changes in the future, you will hear from us, I assure you.
The Department of Homeland Security considers LSO to be an “essential business” so I would be surprised if our service is seriously impacted anytime soon. We are doing all the things you would expect us to do including following the guidance of global health experts at the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus. But there is more to our planning to keep everyone as safe as possible.
Having said that, this is one of the most common questions I receive from many of you, “Is package delivery safe?” I am not a doctor or scientist so the only thing I can rely on is what the true experts say. The WHO and CDC have both stated that the likelihood of catching the COVID-19 virus by touching cardboard or any other shipping containers is low for a variety of reasons. Does that mean packages you receive are risk-free? I don’t think anyone can give that assurance, but again, the experts think the risk is low.
Here is another question I frequently hear, “What are we doing to keep people who drive for LSO and your people safe?” Our technology allows us to take a picture of the package with your signature on it as part of the permanent delivery record. No exchange of pens, paper or handheld devices. It seems like only us regional carriers can do that for some reason. The LSO operations team has also provided ways for the drivers to be a safe distance apart whenever possible and they use common sense to send anyone home who appears sick. We have also provided an LSO Care Kit to drivers with soap, a bottle of water and a bandana. We have finally found sources of plain masks and hand sanitizers that will supplement their current kits. None of this is foolproof. However, one driver contacted me over the weekend to say that he appreciated that we are doing more than many other companies whose drivers he sees every day.
